While the genre and mechanics make up a significant part of the experience of any given game, that experience can also be influenced by the tone and goal of the project. The upcoming title Elixir of Moonglow will see players go on an adventure while exploring the depths of alchemy as an apprentice but takes on a lighthearted feeling due to a cozy art style and pacing promised by the developer, Lineria. The game recently received a release date trailer giving scenes and gameplay from the final product.
The trailer is framed as a storybook opening into a simple house where the main character is laying on her bed. The game’s Steam page identified her as Ella, an Alchemist Apprentice. As she heads outside, she is greeted by her friends and family, including her loyal wolf companion, Umbra. Together, the two of them set off into the wild forest beyond in search of materials for magic all in the name of becoming the town’s greatest alchemist.
In accordance with the simple premise, players will focus primarily on exploring the world to find various crafting materials. The trailer showcases movable objects that create simple puzzles that allow for progression to later areas when completed. One way Ella is shown to gather materials is through a fishing minigame, which she can then put to use to make items likes lanterns and juice. The comforting journey’s tension builds as the trailer hints at a deeper truth existing in the world, leading to a chase sequence with a collapsing floor. Finally, the trailer ends on a somber note as Ella is seen looking forlorn and thanking Umbra for being there for her.
Elixir of Moonglow promises to give an adventure of personal growth without requiring too much consistent investment from the player. The hidden truth of the world will become clear when the game releases on PC on November 10th.
