EA took to Twitter to announce their annual EA Play showcase will return on Thursday, June 11th in a digital-only format. Since it was first introduced in 2016, EA Play has always been a physical event, allowing attendees to get hands-on with featured games. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this years event will be held on EA’s official website.
The showcase will be broadcasted live beginning at 4pm Pacific time / 7pm Eastern time. There are no confirmed games for the event, though a look into the next installment of their FIFA and Madden franchises seems likely. EA will also have a chance to address next-gen console titles and any new information regarding The Sims franchise. Their announcement mentions world premieres, which could pertain to the unannounced Project Maverick Star Wars game that leaked back in March. A long-shot may be sneak peek at the next Battlefield game, which EA confirmed will release in the fiscal year 2022.
Last years EA Play featured multiple live streams in place of a press conference for viewers watching online. Other content included trailers, behind the scenes photos, and insight from the development teams. There doesn’t appear to be a reason that these festivities can’t still happen through a digital format. There’s no word yet on how things will work exactly, but EA isn’t the only company exploring digital alternatives. Events like GDC, and Gamescom were forced to move online due the global health crisis.
