Although it’s no big surprise, today we have confirmation that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be coming out next year, as well as multiple sequels to the Battlefront series. In EA’s earning report, CFO Blake Jorgensen said that Battlefront 2 will have “bigger and better worlds” than the first Battlefront and feature content from “the new movies.” The first Battlefront only had content from the original trilogy, as well as Jakku as a downloadable map, but it sounds like Battlefront 2 will at least have content from The Force Awakens and Rouge One.
Battlefront 2 will be part of EA’s deal with Disney to make a new Star Wars game every year for about the next four years. The sequel is no surprise considering that Star Wars Battlefront shipped over 14 million copies. Jorgensen stated that the sequel will be coming out “next year” which we’re not sure means the year 2017 or the fiscal year which starts on April 1st.
Just to be clear, this new game will be called Star Wars Battlefront 2, while the original series sequel was called Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Just look for the semicolon so you won’t get confused.
EA has big plans for Star Wars videogames. Along with Battlefront 2, there was also the announced Star Wars third person shooter by the Titanfall developers and another game by the studio behind Dead Space. There is also the fan-made Battlefront 3, which is currently in legal limbo with Disney.
Star Wars Battlefront released November last year to critical acclaim, although many fans were a little disappointed with the lack of content. Hopefully EA will listen to the fan’s suggestions, and Battlefront 2 will have more gameplay modes, weapon and class variety, and an actual single-player campaign. I guess Star Wars will join Battlefield and Call of Duty in the “New slightly different shooter every year” club.
