Star Wars fans may be excited to hear that EA has much more in store for the Star Wars IP in the future. Yesterday, EA executives held a “Fireside Chat” via Gamespot in which they discussed the companies plans regarding one of their most profitable licenses, Star Wars. The executives stated that after the huge success of their three main Star Wars games, namely Star Wars Battlefront 1, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Galaxy Of Heroes, and Jedi Fallen Order, the company intends to “double down” on the franchise and strengthen EA’s partnership with Disney.
In a statement regarding how he felt about the direction of the Star Wars Franchise, EA CEO Andrew Wilson had this to say, “Up is my hope–up and to the right,”. He then continued by stating that EA has a very good relationship with both Disney and Lucas and that the company has a “longstanding relationship with them going all the way back to Star Wars The Old Republic that we launched in 2011.” This strong relationship with Disney has allowed EA to expand upon the Star Wars Universe. This can be supported by EA CFO Blake Jorgensen’s statement that “EA is in a rare position where it’s been allowed to create entirely new characters and content for the Star Wars universe thanks to its strong creative partnership with Disney.”
The effect of this position can be seen most clearly with the release of the incredibly popular Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, in which EA was able to produce new characters and story content allowing players to experience the galaxy of Star Wars in a post-new republic setting from the perspective of Jedi Survivor Cal Kestis. The power of this position will also be put on display with the upcoming space combat game Star Wars: Squadrons which will reportedly take players to ” places in the Star Wars galaxy that have never been seen before.” While the “Fireside Chat” didn’t reveal much more about what EA has in store for the Star Wars IP, it appears that the Star Wars Universe will be receiving numerous expansions in the future.
Star Wars: Squadrons will be available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 and will be released on October 2, 2020.
