E3 2013: Mirror’s Edge 2

One of the more interesting title announcements so far to come out of the Entertainment Electronics Expo (E3) that is now under way in Los Angeles is Mirror’s Edge 2, a sequel to developer Dice’s futuristic first person parkour frustration-fest, Mirror’s Edge.

The sequel is expected to be another single-player story, taking place before the events of the original Mirror’s Edge.

Five years on, will it fix the problems?

Mirror’s Edge was released in 2007 and tells the story of Faith, a foot courier in a hard-to-imagine future where government surveillance of data traffic has made it desirable to move certain information via sneakernet.

The game itself broke new ground in terms of first-person immersiveness where the player character had a physical body and a large commitment to an accurate visual representation of what would be seen in every situation the player encountered. Combining this first person presentation with parkour moves, however, lead to a game that was often very frustrating for players– where certain segments of the game became “interface puzzles” (where players are punished not for not knowing what to do in a situation, but by not knowing how to do what they intend with the game’s controls).

Other than that frustration, though, Mirror’s Edge was an appreciably groundbreaking game in story-telling, visual presentation, and mechanics– leaving plenty of room for a sequel to get it right.
