E3 2019: Dying Light 2 Impressions

The big, main focus of Dying Light 2 is the idea of choices and consequence. In a behind closed doors demo, that is what developer Techland wanted to introduce in this sequel. The idea of choices impacting the story and the world around you. Techland said that even after completing the game, you’ll only see about 50% of the game as a whole. The demo that was shown highlighted this aspect of the game as well as several new gameplay enhancements to the game.

Dying Light 2 takes place in a grim, dark unforgiving, infected world that is plunged into a modern age. It’s set 15 years after Dying Light and puts you into the shoes of Aiden Caldwell, an infected survivor. The world consists of 7 different regions that will introduce new enemies, gameplay mechanics, side quests, and more.

The demo took place in Region 2 starting in a tavern as Aiden tries to navigate a truce that will restore water to the region. As you might expect, it doesn’t go well and this is when the choices start coming into play. A friend of Aiden’s gets shot and you can either chase after the people who shot him or stay with him. For the demo, Aiden chased after the truck and started showcasing the new gameplay mechanics of parkour and combat.

If you liked the movement in Dying Light, chances are you’re going to like the movement in Dying Light 2. It’s just as fluid and as precise as its predecessor but there are a ton of new moves to pull off that put it over the top. One of the things that are changing with the parkour is the addition of tools that will help you navigate throughout the world.

Aiden has a grappling hook that can be used to swing across buildings as well as help get yourself up to the vents if you need to find a way to escape a perilous situation whether it be with humans or the infected zombies. He also has a paraglider that he can use to glide to a rooftop or the ground safely. The environment also plays a role in navigation because of its dynamic nature. You can kick drop a zombie or a human through a window to make a door or tackle a zombie out a window and use it to break your fall. The crafted weapons have also been overhauled from the last game.

Dying Light 2 is shaping up to be a very fun ride where the choices you make matter and the gameplay is just as fun and crazy as it was in the original but ratcheted up. Dying Light 2 is releasing Spring 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
