E3 2014: Omni Production Manager Talks VR, Release Date

Colton Jacobs, Product Manager of Virtuix, spoke about the company’s Virtuix Omni virtual reality platform as it showed off tech demos. Speaking at the E3 booth, Jacobs explained that the Omni is a “virtual reality platform that allows you to walk and move your character in a game.”

People are able to put a head seats at their E3 booth and walk across Omni’s platform that reads the movement of a player. Instead of the basic VR experience, running and jumping are physical actions carried out by the player.

Two games shown are developed for the Omni, in-house, from Virtuix Omni. TRAVR is a demo where players take control of the character in TRAVR to get a small taste of what the VR device is all about.

“[TRAVR] is a first person virtual reality horror survival game,” Jacobs said. “We developed it in-house. It’s a short demo game.”

The second game is more of a traveling simulator set in Amsterdam, said Jacob. A player is able to experience walking around the city and look around the environment.

“This is really virtual reality tourism,” he said. “So you’ll be able to walk around a street and kinda check it out. It’s kinda showing what kind of impact [Omni] has on virtual reality.”

There is a center piece for the device for someone to strap themselves into by their waist. Leg movements are contained in the platform to create a moving feeling and is a step up from the basic Oculus Rift VR headset, which is used for the experience.

When asked if the company considered using other types of VR headsets, Jacob said that nothing matches how far into development Oculus Rift is.

“Its the most commercial ready,” he said. “Its going to be coming to the market soon. We can use almost any kind of head-mount display. There’s no limitation [of options], but defiantly the Oculus is the best.”

Jacob continued to say that Omni is able to be integrated into “almost any PC game” by emulating keyboard functions into the buttons of a regular game pad. So, if a game is able to function with a plug-in game pad, Omni is compatible for that game.

“We are going to have a mode on the Omni where you’re going to play legacy games,” he said. “[You can play] any game that’s existing right now; old, new.”

An SDK for developers will be available in the next two months so they can “emulate the Omni directly into their game.”

“We want to be able to walk forward and look around into any direction without having to think about ‘okay when I turn is where I’m going to go.'” Jacob added in speaking about the vision of the company. “[Omni] adds so much to the virtual reality experience, it’s actually pretty amazing.”

Right now the estimated shipping time is October of this year and its said to cost $499 for the package. Check out the video below for the Omni in action.
