Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined was revealed in yesterday morning’s Nintendo Direct alongside a release date set for February 5th, 2026. This revamped 2001 PlayStation classic is sure to draw in fans new and old thanks to Square Enix’s approach to modernizing the story structure of the original. Weaving a streamlined story with optional side quests, stories, minigames, and even more modernizing touches, Square Enix is attempting to bring old-school Dragon Quest into the modern era, and it looks like it might just work!

Gamers are sure to adore the hand-crafted and colorful style Square Enix has chosen for this remake, as the cast of characters looks beautifully cartoony and vibrant, reminiscent of Super Mario RPG. This design choice, paired with beautifully diorama-like scenery reminiscent of the recently unveiled The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, is sure to draw the eyes of RPG fans, young and old. It’s no wonder the characters in this remake were designed using real-life dolls.

The modern-day RPG flair Square Enix is bringing to this classic remake only keeps getting better as the battle system has been overhauled, allowing for brand new multi-attack abilities, moment-to-moment character temperament-related actions, and monster taming, allowing beastly partners to fight at your side. Not only this, but thanks to the new user interface implemented for this remake, the exploration of the worlds, towns, and dungeons of Dragon Quest VII will be a breeze, thanks to the massive implementation of quality-of-life features. All of these additions work to make the experience of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined as streamlined and beginner-friendly as possible, while still allowing for the strategic battling and story-driven world-building aspects of a Dragon Quest game to shine through.
