It’s been a little more than two years since Nintendo released their mobile title Dr. Mario World. The game hasn’t exactly been received very well by the gaming community since it launched in 2019 for iOS and Android. With the two-year milestone just passing, Nintendo has had to take hard look at their fledgling mobile venture, and it seems the company has made a decision in this regard. Nintendo has officially announced that Dr. Mario World will be shutting down permanently later this year on November 1.
In addition to this announcement, Nintendo has also revealed that starting today, players will no longer be able to pay for the diamond in-game currency. This essentially cuts off the main income of the title’s revenue and solidifies the ending of the service. While there were more than likely a number of factors that played into this choice, the biggest point is arguably the amount of actual profit the game was bringing in, which was not a whole lot. According to a Sensor Tower graph in 2020, Dr. Mario World was dead last in players spending real-life money on Nintendo mobile titles.
The game didn’t even account for 1% of the overall revenue, which is not a good sign if you’re following that avenue for the game’s main mechanic. At the end of the day, the title wasn’t drawing the numbers that Nintendo had hoped it would. For those looking to play some more matches on Dr. Mario World, you have until November 1 to do so. Once we reach that date, the game will no longer launch and you’ll instead be given an end-of-service notice.
