Beat ‘em up games haven’t been on everyone’s radar recently, with triple A and indie developers steering towards more story driven games. Of those games, often horror and roguelike are the genres explored. However, with a new announcement, classic beat ‘em up fans might have something new to look forward to. Double Dragon, the classic beat ‘em up series that began as an arcade game in the late 80s, will be making a return with Double Dragon Revive set to release in 2025 on the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X│S, and on PC. Developer Arc System Works released a teaser trailer for the new game earlier today, with the attached blurb of:
The Double Dragon series has defined the belt-scroll action genre ever since it hit the arcades in 1987.
Now it returns as Double Dragon Revive, thanks to the passionate support of retro game fans over the years!
This will be another addition to the main series of games, the first since 2017’s Double Dragon IV, the installment numbers get very confusing very quickly. Either way Revive’s teaser trailer showcases the return of some classic characters including Billy and Jimmy Lee serving as protagonists again. The trailer opens with an arcade machine screen flashing the original logo and then playing through a few seconds of a fight, before transitioning into the actual gameplay. Revive seems to be sticking to its new moniker very seriously as it departs from the classic pixel art style for a more modern 3D aesthetic.
Some other features that stood out in the trailer was pushing opponents into nearby set pieces such as a fridge, an open dumpster, etc. and then slamming it shut. Whether this is a new finishing move or taking the use of found weapons one step further remains to be seen. Something for players to experiment with upon release.
