DOOM Release Date Announced along with Special Edition

It was announced today by Bethesda that id Software’s long-awaited DOOM game will be released for PS4, XBOX ONE, and PC on May 13th.  Bethesda also announced that there will be an open beta of the game before launch, although no specific date has been announced yet.  Anyone who preordered Bethesda’s Wolfenstein: The New Order will be able to access the beta when it releases.

Along with the release date, Bethesda announced a collector’s edition of the game that will go for $120.  This edition of the game will include a 12-inch statue of the game’s signature enemy, the Revenant, along with a steel case for the game.  The statue comes with an “LED-lit base with internal slow-spinning turbine,” and it was modeled from the games actual 3-D model, so there is some high-quality work put into this statue.

Bethesda also announced some other exclusive content for those who pre-order the standard or collector’s editions of the game.  Those who pre-order will get the Demon Multiplayer Pack which contains a unique demon armor set with three skin variants, six metallic paint colors and three id logo patterns for weapons and armor, plus six Hack Modules- one-time consumable items that can give you an edge in multiplayer matches.  It’s a pretty good deal to customize your character and give you a little boost right when the game comes out.

Bethesda also a released a new campaign trailer for the game (see above).  It looks like the game will have that frantic craziness of the original games but have it keep up with this current generation.  I get a sort of Serious-Sam vibe from the trailer and the updated versions of the old sprites look cool and terrifying.

From what we’ve seen, it looks like Bethesda has put in a lot of work for DOOMDOOM is one of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, but the last major iteration in the series was DOOM 3 over ten years ago.  Hopefully DOOM will capture that same excitement and fun that drew people in when the series started back in 93.
