Doom 4 is getting a sneak preview later this month, but don’t get too excited: the game’s next big reveal will be exclusive to attendees at QuakeCon.
You’ve been clamoring for it for years, and now the wait is almost over. As announced in our E3 teaser trailer, fans in attendance at QuakeCon 2014 will have the opportunity to get sneak peek at what’s been going on with the new DOOM game from id Software.
A sneak peek of the new Doom? It’s enough to make our hearts leap with joy, is it not? But wait, there’s more:
This an exclusive thing we are doing for attendees as part of our Annual QuakeCon Welcome presentation. We’ll have plenty more to show everyone at a later date, but we didn’t want another QuakeCon to go by without doing something special for the amazing QC community and id supporters that have been with us for more than 20 years.
Our hearts, once filled with wonder and happiness, now wither in our chests.
QuakeCon attendees will be treated to the preview of id’s next big game on the first day of festivities this year. Doom 4 is by no means the only thing at the show, but for many people it will be the biggest.
It was just last month that Bethesda and id released a brand-new trailer for the upcoming game, in production for several years now. Though the game’s direction apparently took a radical redesign some time last year, player excitement for Doom 4 (or Doom, or DOOM, or what ever title they end up using for the game) has never ebbed away.
QuakeCon’s exclusive Doom 4 preview will kick off after a panel on creating the perfect game, which may be coincidence or, more likely, a rather ingenious lead-in from the planners in preparation for what is hopefully a mind-blowing presentation on the game.
Id has lost a lot of their luster over the last decade or so. While they were one of the biggest names in the gaming industry during the early to mid-90’s thanks to titles like Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, and Quake, player response to some of their more recent titles — such as Doom 3 or RAGE — has been less enthusiastic. In Doom 3’s case many players felt the developer’s turn toward survival-esque ammo management and jump scares abandoned the free spirited run and gun approach that defined the earlier games, while RAGE left many feeling dissatisfied with id’s devotion to corridor mechanics.
Things are starting to look up for the developer, though. Most recently Wolfenstein: The New Order, a reboot of the classic Nazi shooter, has received very positive response, improving on many of the elements people had issues with in RAGE, and the company’s declaration that they want to take the atmosphere and feel of Doom 4 back to the originals has many players eagerly anticipating just what that means for the gameplay and vibe of the title.
After several years out of the lime light, Doom 4 might just be part of a rebirth for id in the modern gaming market, and we’ll get our first preview of that at QuakeCon.
