Robbie Lakeman decided that holding the high score world record in Donkey Kong just wasn’t quite enough for him. He knew he could do better, and last week on Twitch, he did.
His previous score was 1,230,100, established in December. Twin Galaxies, the organization that maintains the lists and verifies high scores on these arcade classics, only just verified the score recently. His new score, 1,247,700 was achieved live on Twitch over nearly four hours of gameplay. It is an impressive run, and makes use of every opportunity to earn points before completing a level.
This of course comes on the heels of Twin Galaxies investigating Billy Mitchell’s scores. The antagonist of the the popular documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Mitchell’s score of 1,062,800 sits at number 12 on the high score list. However recently questions have surfaced about how he obtained that score, and whether it was set on an official arcade cabinet or an emulator. No final ruling has been issued by Twin Galaxies.
Lakeman has not yet submitted his score to Twin Galaxies but it is likely that he will soon. And judging by the live stream and video of the record, it is unlikely it will be challenged. You can check out Lakeman’s historic run below.
