Doki Doki Literature Club Removed From Google Play Store

Doki Doki Literature Club is a psychological horror game that was released back in September‌ 2017 for Pc and was a big success due to its nature. On the surface, the game is a Japanese-style visual novel set in high school, featuring cute girls, but beneath the surface are dark themes such as depression and suicide. It’s a psychological horror game. And because of those themes, Google has chosen to remove the game from its Play Store due to it violating its terms of service. The game was released for mobile in 2025, and now, only a year later, it was removed on April 8, 2026, unexpectedly.

Google’s reasoning behind removing the game is due to its game content, and that they violate their terms of service because of its depictions of sensitive content. Google has the right to remove apps and games from its Play Store if the content depicts sensitive themes in poor taste and violates its terms of service, but Doki Doki Literature Club isn’t that. In Serenity Forge’s words about the game they say “DDLC is widely celebrated for portraying mental health in a way that meaningfully connects deeply with players around the world, helping them feel heard, understood, and less alone on their journey,” they also go on to say “Managing to achieve that – making a truly meaningful difference by using the power of fiction to connect to others – is what I’m most grateful for. It inspires me every day to keep making cool new things, things that can really reach others, especially those in need of connection.”

Due to its removal, many are upset with Google’s decision, and seeing a highly regarded game removed for its content is not a good thing. It paints the Google Play Store in a bad light, but it can also dissuade other developers or companies from releasing their games on the platform, locking players, new and old, out of experiencing new games. But not all is lost, Dan Salvato and the Serenity Forge Team are working hard to bring the game back to Android, and they are thankful for all the support and will keep everyone updated on the game’s future on Android.

Jorge Peredo: Growing up, I've always been fascinated by storytelling, whether through reading, watching, or playing video games. Having been exposed to storytelling for so long, I have been influenced, and through that influence, I seek to write and create my own stories that others can enjoy and that I can be proud of.
