In 2019, Bandai Namco Entertainment teased the release of their newest game titled Digimon Survive. The game was delayed to 2020 for unknown reasons, then further delayed to 2021 “due to the effects of current world events,” then it was delayed once more to this year. After three years, anime enthusiasts will be pleased to know that an official release date for Digimon Survive has been announced!
The Digimon franchise has reached its 25th anniversary this year after the release of virtual pet toys, manga, anime, and film adaptations. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory was the latest console game to come out back in 2017. With this game receiving good reviews, it makes sense to follow up with a new game to celebrate the milestone. Fans of the franchise will not have to wait much longer since the release of Digimon Survive was confirmed in the latest trailer.
Digimon Survive is an upcoming visual novel/survival RPG developed by Hyde and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game “sees a brand-new group of teenagers, led by Takuma Momozuka, get lost on a school camping trip, finding them transported to a strange new world of monsters and danger” according to the Bandai Namco website. There is a sense of mystery within the story as players can use a cell phone to scan the environment for hidden clues. Role-playing elements are also featured: players make their own choices to influence the direction of the story, including the Digimon’s digivolution process and final ending. However, if wrong choices are made, characters will be killed off. The incorporation of multiple choices and endings adds to the replay value of Digimon Survive since players can venture down a different route on a second run.
Digimon Survive will be released globally for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on July 29th. Japanese fans of Digimon will have the advantage of playing the game a day early on July 28th.
