The roguelite shooter, known as Die After Sunset, is PlayStark’s and PQube’s colorful attempt at the genre. The game is more on the whacky side, but it still nonetheless stays within the boundaries of the genre.
Although the game saw an early release (2022) on PC, the game is now available on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
The game contains the following motto: loot, loot, loot before you shoot, shoot, shoot. This motto resonates well within the roguelite shooter genre and the game certainly plays within that motto.
The game itself is a third-person shooter and is very reminiscent of Returnal. The title of Die After Sunset is a more silly take on the roguelite genre but the game is quite serious when it comes to taking down bosses and collecting loot.
Before embarking on a run within Die After Sunset, there is a key decision to make. To quote the description of the game, “Playing as one of the three unique ‘Defenders’ will shape your forthcoming build most drastically, so endeavor to check out each one.” Continually, “Rido is the most up-close and personal Defender, with machine gun to hand. April, on the other hand, specialises in accurate sharp-shooting. Further still, the mysteries of the finger-lazor shooting Hune is something that you’ll have to solve for yourself…”
Throughout your runs, you’ll pick up an assortment of abilities and upgrades scattered throughout the lush and colorful environment. While on a run, you’ll encounter a bunch of aliens which have inhabited the Earth in a sort of apocalyptic fashion. Players will also have to complete some of the 19 in-game missions that appear while on a run. You’ll also have to defeat tough bosses along the way.
Death is another important aspect of the game. Death in the case of this game, is an opportunity to do better on the next run. Essentially, death provides wisdom and knowledge for a player’s next run.
