Dicey Dungeons, after seeing multiple Alpha versions since June of last year, finally has a bonafide release date. The game, which will be releasing on Steam and itch.io on August 13, is an upcoming dice-based strategy game. The game revolves around a group of six heroes who have been transformed into dice by Lady Luck and thrust into perilous dungeons.

Players will have the option of choosing one of six heroes, Inventor, Jester, Robot, Thief, Warrior, or Witch, each of which has different ability sets. Players will roll dice which they will then use to slot into different abilities and power-up slots to take down the foes that lurk within each dungeon. Collect treasure to upgrade your loadout and customize how each character plays, hoping to best Lady Luck herself and revert back to normal.
The game had been releasing periodic alpha updates via itch since its announcement last year, adding new features and changes to the game. The most recent, the “very last alpha before launch,” according to the page, brought a new episode for the Warrior character. The new mode is “practically a whole new game, using the same basic rules,” and saw a complete rework of each piece of equipment to function in the new system. The frequent updates for all who have been waiting for the game, coupled with a desire to try different things, shows just how much the game means to its creator.
The game’s creator, Terry Cavanagh of distractionware, has created games such games as Super Hexagon, VVVVVV, and State Machine as well as a number of other non-commercial games. Those fans of Super Hexagon, the difficult musical dodging game, will be pleased to hear the musical composer, Chipzel, has returned for Dicey Dungeons. Cavanagh, paired with Chipzel, and the delightfully unique art style of Marlowe Dobbe, hope to bring a fresh new take on the turn-based strategy genre.
The game, once released on August 13, will be available through Steam and itch.io on PC, Mac, and Linux.
