Diablo IV To Have Customizable Characters for the First Time in Series

Fans of Blizzard’s long-standing Diablo series are in for a treat, as announced by the Diablo IV Quarterly Update released on June 30th. This is the first update since the BlizzConline Deep Dive Panel in February 2021, and one of many updates since the announcement of the game in 2019. In this blog update, Blizzard and several game developers showcase in-depth the work that has been done on character customization in-game, which will be a new feature in Diablo IV not available in any of the other games in the series.

Diablo IV offers players more customization options than ever in a Diablo game, which makes achieving that result more challenging, but the outcome is well worth it. Your Barbarian is different from anyone else’s but still feels undeniably like a Barbarian.

Diablo IV will feature detailed versions of the usual character customization options, including a changeable face, hair, jewelry, makeup, and body modifications. These changes will vary based on class, of which there are 5 to start. The developers will also be introducing a dye system, which will allow players to change the color palette of any part of their armor. The biggest challenge, which the developers elaborated on in the news post, was how to integrate these customizations into the game itself and not just the cinematics. They will employ techniques such as Physically-Based Rendering, detail mapping, and extended character design to make the characters and monsters look and feel realistic to the players.

Alongside the post, work in progress pictures and videos were released to highlight the amount of work that has been and still will be done on the game to make it an exceptional experience. As it stands, the developers sound happy with the outcomes of their work, which bodes well for the upcoming game.
