According to the data tracking website Appmagic, Diablo Immortal has been off to good start financially despite some backlash on certain parts of the game. It has been nearly three weeks since Diablo Immortal launched on June 2, and they have already made over $24 million in that span. This early financial success means that the game is already Blizzard’s second-highest profiting mobile game, behind just Hearthstone which released in 2014.
In addition to bringing in $24 million, Diablo Immortal has already surpassed five million downloads. The majority of revenue comes from both the United States and South Korea, with the two countries accounting for 44% and 22% of the total profits to this point. Diablo Immortal’s quick start can largely be attributed to the high level of microtransactions in the game, which some players find unnecessarily excessive.
Many users have found that the game’s microtransactions are needed in order to accomplish anything. Many players have made the argument that they are at a disadvantage unless they are willing to spend money to upgrade their players. Other issues with the game, such as loot caps and issues with legendary gems, have not helped the overall rating and opinions throughout the community. Each of these issues has played a role in some of the negative reviews Diablo Immortal has received, but they have not seemed to hurt the overall revenue of the game to this point.
Microtransactions have been working their way into the gaming community for some time now, with the majority of games containing some level of microtransactions that promote consistent spending. Although Diablo Immortal has received backlash for the amount and importance of its microtransactions, many fans have still chosen to play the game and spent money upgrading their character. The next biggest question will be whether Diablo Immortal can keep up the success in the long term.
