Diablo Creator Is Releasing A 2D Indie Dungeon Crawler Called It Lurks Below

David Brevik, the creator of Diablo, has announced his upcoming game It Lurks Below with an official trailer. Players are set to explore randomly generated dungeons that unveil various enemies to be fought with weapons forged from collected loot.

The game utilizes 2D retro-style art design similar to Terraria, and shares the free-form building mechanic as well. Players can elect to create a custom character for their quest, and choose among several different classes before delving into caves filled with danger. The dungeons become more maze-like and convoluted as players dig down to explore the looming evils beneath them. Items need to be scavenged to continue, and deadly monsters must be defeated in the hopes of unraveling the mysteries of the world they reside in.

Copious hours of gameplay can be found on Brevik’s Twitch channel, graybeardgames. The Minecraft-style mechanics and user interface can be seen here, alongside user stats, weapon maintenance, and level design. The amount of resource management needed to succeed is observed through the hours spent roaming the dungeons, and demonstrates that there are various methods that can be utilized to progress. Basic stats include vitality, wisdom, intelligence, and attack power, which can be leveled at each player’s liking. Armor and speed can also be managed to the individual’s preference. Players are encouraged to build shelters, work on finding food, and tending to hunger from the get-go. The environment is interactable, leaving the possibility for caves to be mined and processed for later use.

Brevik has not yet announced a release date for this project, but suspects it will be available on Steam sometime this year. Updates and more gameplay can be found by checking Brevik’s Twitter.
