It has been known for a little while now that part of Nintendo’s presentation at E3 this year will include tournaments for the company’s yet-to-be-released games Splatoon 2 and ARMS. According to Nintendo Wire, Nintendo recently sent out a press release giving some more details about these tournaments.
The first of these two tournaments will be the 2017 Splatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational, which will take place on Tuesday, June 13 at about 2:30PM PST. The competition will be between four four-person teams: “Deadbeat” from the United States, “Dynameu” from Japan, “Rising Moon” from Europe and “Blue Ringed Octolings” from Australia/New Zealand. Each of these teams was selected by winning in local tournaments over the last few months. The press release states that in the first round of the tournament, “teams will battle in a round-robin Turf War tournament that will decide seeding for the next round.” After that, the teams will participate in Splatoon 2‘s Ranked Battle modes. Next, the winners of the semifinals will be determined by a best-three-out-of-five battle and the winner of the final round will have to win a best-five-out-of-seven battle.
The winning team of the tournament will receive a Splatoon 2 trophy with each members’ names engraved on it, as well as “global bragging rights.” The announcers for the tournament will include former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jordan Kent, CNET’s Ashley Esqueda and Nintendo Treehouse’s Eric Smith.
The 2017 ARMS Open Invitational will take place the following day, Wednesday, June 14 at 3:30PM PST. In this tournament, four fighting game experts will face off against four E3 attendees who will be picked earlier in the day. Attendees can qualify to participate in the tournament by visiting the Nintendo booth between 10:00AM and 1:00PM PST on the day of the tournament. The four fighting game experts that will take part in the tournament are Alex Valle, a Street Fighter expert, Kelsy Medeiros A.K.A. SuperGirlKels, a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U expert, Daniel “Tafokints” Lee, a Super Smash Bros. expert, and Marie-Laure “Kayane” Norindr, another Super Smash Bros. expert. The tournament will be announced by Super Smash Bros. broadcasters D1 and VikkiKitty. The winner of the tournament will receive the 2017 ARMS Open Invitational championship belt.
Both tournaments will be streamed on Nintendo’s YouTube channel, Nintendo’s Twitch channel and at e3.nintendo.com. ARMS hits stores on June 16 and Splatoon 2 becomes available on July 21. Both games will be Switch exclusives.
