There’s no denying the success of Destiny, Bungie’s latest IP and successor to the now iconic Halo series, but a constant knock on the game has been it’s story or lack thereof. Players of the game might have finally gotten some answers to their gripes in court documents published by VentureBeat.
The documents pertain to the recently settled lawsuit between Bungie and composer of the Halo and Destiny soundtrack, Marty O’Donnell, regarding outstanding shares of the company. Paragraph 10 of section II reveals this tidbit of information.
Although Destiny was planned for release in September 2013, the story was substantially revised beginning August 2013, requiring a new release date of March 2014 and edits to much of the work previously completed. After a brief vacation/sabbatical in early fall, O’Donnell returned, worked on the story and recorded dialogue, but wrote no additional music. His supervisor and the audio team did not consider him to be fully engaged in the work of Audio Director. For reasons unrelated to O’Donnell’s performance, the release date was again moved, to September 2014
Prior to it’s release last September, Destiny’s lore was optimistically expected to match and exceed that of Halo and quite possibly put in the same class of epics such as Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, and Star Wars as stated by COO Pete Parsons in an interview with GamesIndustry International. Most of the game’s lore however is told through the use of Grimoire Cards, a feature which is not included in-game but online. Having player’s jump through these unnecessary hoops to learn more about the game’s backstory was an immediate put off to those interested in getting to know more about the universe.
Speculation on the game’s story being revised also dates back to when Destiny’s lead writer, Joseph Staten, left the company a year before release. Interesting to note is that the court documents reveal the decision to revise the story came in August 2013, a month before Staten departed.
Destiny’s latest expansion The Taken King is set for release later this month on September 15. The expansion is set to have a renewed focus on the game’s story so players anxiously await to see if this promise holds up.
