Earlier this month, Bungie became the latest casualty in this year’s recurring theme of layoffs within the industry. Around 100 staff, roughly 8% of Bungie’s workforce were affected. During this time, it was also reported that Bungie’s upcoming projects, Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Marathon were delayed. Today, Bungie made The Final Shape‘s delay official and announced that the last chapter of Destiny’s Light and Darkness Saga will now launch on June 4, 2024.
The release date for The Final Shape has moved to June 4, 2024 to allow for an even bigger and bolder vision.
New content available is also in development, including Destiny 2: Into the Light, a two-month content update for all players starting in April.https://t.co/cNAG0j1dlV pic.twitter.com/zvEhfeCNut

In its official statement, the Destiny 2 Dev Team wrote “. We’ll keep it short and simple. The Final Shape needs more time to become exactly what we want it to be, so we’re moving its release date to June 4, 2024. The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together. We want to honor that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come.”
With the delay, the dev team announced changes to its upcoming release calendar. The next season for Destiny, Season of the Witch which begins tomorrow will be extended until the launch of The Final Shape. The narrative and content for the season will run from late November to February as originally planned. Now, new content will be added for all players to jump into until the launch of The Final Shape in June.

New weekly progression-based quests called Wishes are coming in February along with the launch of Moments of Triumph with unique rewards. The Guardian Games are getting moved up to March and will have a refreshed focus on class vs. class competition. In April, Bungie is releasing Destiny 2: Into the Light, a two-month content update available to everyone. Into the Light will prepare players for their Guardian’s journey into the Traveler. Everything will be in addition to the ongoing efforts from the PvP team, including three new PvP maps coming to the game in May.
“We know you’re eager to get your hands on The Final Shape. In that sense, delays aren’t fun,” the Destiny 2 Dev Team said. “For our part, we are excited to have the extra time needed to bring our vision for The Final Shape to life for all of you. We’re looking forward to sharing much more in April, including all-new gameplay, to showcase the significant content additions currently in development.”
