Earlier today, Steam released their official page for Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, a single-player auto-shooter with features akin to the previous game in the Ghost Ship’s catalog, Deep Rock Galactic. Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is set to release sometime in late 2023 for early access on the PC only at the moment.
Coming off the heels of Deep Rock Galactic, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor will have big shoes to fill. When the original game was released in 2020, it was met with critical acclaim. According to the steam website, many of the reviews the game garnered were near perfect. The reviews for the game averaged at around a 9/10, also being nominated for a BAFTA game award for best multiplayer game.
That being said, while Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor keeps the mining aesthetic, with the same bugs, weapons and similar environments, the execution of these games will be completely different. The first Deep Rock Galactic was a 1-4 player co-op first-person shooter style game, whereas the new installment is a single-player, auto-shooter with a top-down perspective.
How Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor will work is, the main character will traverse mines to get riches and achieve upgrades on weapons in their possession. As the player goes deeper into the mines, they will have more access to riches, as well as more enemies will spawn to try to take down the main character. Players will attempt to complete missions while in the mines using four unique characters, before going back to the Drop Pod to gain access to stronger and more fruitful encounters.
The early release will provide plenty of content for players including: 4 playable characters, over 30 weapons, more than 10 types of enemies, 1-3 bosses, between 3-5 biomes, multiple different types of missions and a large progressions system for artifacts, perks and upgrades throughout the players’ adventures. The developers also note that this is just what will be available for the initial early access. There will be more of every type of content mentioned above on the finished release of the game. Additionally, they will also work on more content based on feedback and initial responses to the early access. Although there is still a lot that is unknown right now, this is a good indication of how the game will look and play, looking forward towards its late 2023 release.
