It seems that even more layoffs are on the horizon for the gaming industry before the end of the year. Many companies like Riot, Ubisoft, Rocksteady, and many more have seen layoffs run rampant this year and now Deck Nine Games have announced their second round of layoffs are on the way. This news was released after the mixed reception to the release of Life is Strange: Double Exposure which was released in late October of this year.
Mark Lyons, CEO of Deck Nine, wrote a message on X stating:
Today, we are sad to share the news that we must say goodbye to some of our talented team members. This was an extremely difficult decision and reflects the challenging times many companies in our industry are currently facing. We are extremely grateful to every individual who has dedicated their hard work, passion, and commitment to making transformative entertainment with us.
This will be the second large scale layoff for Deck Nine Games after they cut 20% of their staff in February of this year and also laid off staff in 2023. However, even though the layoffs are occurring, it seems that the company will continue operations. Lyons went on to say:
To those of you leaving the studio due to these changes, thank you for sharing your talents with us. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish together and we are committed to supporting you in this transition in any way we can. To the community, we ask for your support and understanding during this difficult time.
IGN did note the issues that Deck Nine Games has had over recent years within the company, including accusations of several employees who alleged a culture of “toxicity, hate speech, crunch, and more,” with this allegedly breeding a poor workplace culture. However, these accusations have not been confirmed.
