On Tuesday, Behaviour Interactive released a reveal trailer for Dead by Daylight’s upcoming crossover with the iconic 1998 Japanese horror film Ringu. The crossover will feature new DLC, where players can play as the vengeful Sadako Yamamura, who will be a new Killer called The Onryō, and a new Survivor named Yoichi Asakawa, the only living survivor from the Ringu franchise. The trailer also revealed that the 23rd chapter, Sadako Rising, will release on March 8, 2022.
Sadako Rising is inspired by Kōji Suzuki’s 1991 novel and its 1998 film adaptation of the same name called The Ring in Japan but known as Ringu in North America. The film took international audiences by storm and continues to have a prominent influence on horror fans to this day.
Before the trailer release, Behaviour Interactive shared an announcement on Monday going more in-depth about their collaboration with the Kadokawa Corporation, who published Suzuki’s novel and currently owns the rights to Ringu. Kadokawa producer Reiko Imayasu expressed the company’s excitement for Sadako’s debut, “We are very excited for the collaboration with Behaviour Interactive and the Dead by Daylight team. We’ll be sending one of our most haunting characters to the Fog to pour down horrors that will rival all the great predecessors. Fans should beware of their heart; this deadly newcomer will definitely strike them, and they will tremble with fear whilst they wait.”
Accompanying Sadako in Dead by Daylight is Yoichi Asakawa, who was only a young boy when he survived Sadako’s torments in the 1998 film Ringu, making his role as a Survivor even more fitting. As a successful marine biologist who inherited psychic abilities from his father, Yoichi must fight to survive to escape Sadako’s wrath once again. Dead by Daylight will be Yoichi’s first appearance in pop culture after more than 20 years since Ringu, which left many viewers questioning his existence following Sadako’s aftermath.
“To be granted the trust by Kadokawa to finish the story of Yoichi Asakawa is one of the greatest honours for me. Choosing to finally reveal a long-expected untold story via a video game is a bold decision that speaks to the importance of our medium in today’s pop culture,” shared Dead by Daylight’s Creative Director Dave Richard.
After the trailer’s release, a Public Test Build went live that allowed Steam players to play as Sadako, where they could use her ability to teleport through televisions and her new Mori that gives players the option to kill Survivors on the spot. The patch notes also showed Sadako and Yoichi’s perks. Sadako’s unique perks include Scourge Hook: Floods of Rage, Call of Brine, and Merciless Storm, while Yoichi’s unique perks include Parental Guidance, Empathic Connection, and Boon: Dark Theory. All in all, very fitting perks and abilities that represent both characters and their lore.
Chapter 23: Sadako Rising will be available on March 8th for PC (Steam, Epic Games, and Stadia), along with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch.
