Earlier this month, a big Bloomberg report shed some light on the current inner workings at Sony including what the company is planning to do with PlayStation 5. The plan includes focus and double down on the big, AAA blockbuster exclusives that the company has been known for. One of the things being developed with this focus in mind is a remake of The Last of Us. The report revealed that a potential sequel to Days Gone was turned down by Sony due to the response to the first game and the new focus that the company is working towards. Since the release of the report, there has been backlash regarding the news and the Game Director of Days Gone has given some thoughts regarding the situation. Now, Creative Director and Writer of Days Gone, John Garvin, has spoken about the situation surrounding the game.
During the interview with Dave Jaffe, one of the things that Garvin brought up was his opinion on whether or not you buy games when they are released or when they are on sale or a part of a service like the PS Plus Collection. “If you love a game, buy it at f****** full price. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen gamers say ‘yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever,'” Garvin said. Jaffe responded, “But how do you know you love a game until you’ve played it?” Garvin said “I’m just saying, you don’t, but don’t complain if a game doesn’t get a sequel if it wasn’t supported at launch. It’s like, God of War got whatever number millions of sales at launch and, you know, Days Gone didn’t. I’m just speaking for me personally as a developer, I don’t work for Sony, I don’t know what the numbers are.”
Talking about how the sales numbers can affect things instead of engagement, Garvin spoke about how Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror was affected by piracy. The game was being downloaded from torrent sites and wasn’t being bought. Sony Bend tried to show Sony how piracy was affecting the game but Sony wasn’t aware of what it was doing to the sales of the game. “So, I think the uptick in engagement with the game is not as important as, did you buy the game at full price? Because if you did, then that’s supporting the developers directly.”
Since the report was released, they have been plenty of fans showing their support of Days Gone and have said that they would like a sequel to the game. Jeff Ross, the Game Director of Days Gone shared a petition for a sequel that has almost hit 25,000 signatures.
