Unfold Games is preparing for the release of their “psychological horror” game. The project, titled Darq, has come a long way and seen plenty of updates since we last covered it. The game was previously expected to release back in 2018, however, it was eventually pushed back to summer of 2019. The studio managed to complete all level designs this past March, and revealed the game’s official cover art. Unfold Games recently released screenshots showcasing the game’s dark fantastic art style.

Darq follows the adventures of a young boy named Lloyd, who discovers that he is experiencing a dream which quickly turns into a nightmare. All efforts to wake himself have failed, and so he has no choice but to continue to explore deep into his unconscious mind. But there are creatures that wish to harm him, and he stands no chance of fighting them head-on as they are much stronger and faster then he is. In order to survive, Lloyd will need to avoid being detected by his enemies. Solve gravity-defying puzzles by “bending the laws of physics and manipulating the fluid fabric of the dream world.”
In the dream world, anything can happen. The studio mentions, on the game’s website, that jumpscares will be included, but will rarely occur. The focus is on building up tension, rather than violence, and getting the player to anticipate a possible frightening moment. The studio believes that “Once the player knows that a jump scare could happen, they are more likely to stay on the edge of their seats for a very long time.” The soundtrack behind the project will also play a crucial role in the game. The game’s director, 5-time ASCAP Award-winning composer Wlad Marhhlets, specifically created the game around the music and even plans to write the entire score himself.
As the studio plans to launch Darq this upcoming summer, further details regarding the release date should be revealed in the next few months. The game will be accessible for PC players through the Steam Store. Wishlist the title to be notified when it is available for download.
