Darkborn, A New Game From Developer The Outsiders, Revealed

Today, what was once codenamed Project Wright has been revealed as Darkborn, a new game from developer The Outsiders. Darkborn is a first-person stealth-action game that makes you the monster.

David Goldfarb, The Outsiders co-founder, and project lead said that “Darkborn is first and foremost a game about being a monster. Playing it is about experiencing that monstrous quality – in first person combat, in novel abilities and movement, and even in enemy reactions to you.”

The game is set up as a classic revenge story as you and your family are ripped apart from one another. As you progress through the game, you’ll evolve and grow, gaining strength, size, and bestial powers.

However, there will be more to the story. While it will be a classic revenge story, David Goldfarb said “it’s not traditional in that humans are murderous, cruel enemies bent on your extinction. You yourself are an innocent caught up in a much larger conflict between Powers, the specifics of which become clearer in the course of the game. It’s a classic revenge story, but also a mystery: what happened to the world and your people? Can they be saved?”

Darkborn was inspired by a variety of things. The biggest influence came from Grendel, but King Kong, Bambi, and video games like Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of the Colossus were also inspirations.

Goldfarb said “What if the Orcs in Shadow of Mordor were the good guys? What kind of lives did those great beasts in Shadow of the Colossus have before you came to murder them?

Darkborn has been in development for nearly three years by The Outsiders whose studio is located in Stockholm. The team is comprised of 25 members as of now; they were much smaller back then. David Goldfarb said that “Originally The Outsiders was founded to try and make the types of games we wanted to play that we felt no one else was making, Darkborn was the first of those games”.

There is no release window yet but it will come to PC and possibly to consoles when it is ready.
