Mortal Shell, the “ruthless and deep action-RPG”, got a release date trailer today. It’s the debut title of Cold Symmetry, a studio formed back in 2017. It was revealed back in April as a title styled after games like Sekiro and you guessed it – Dark Souls. It’s a title packed with all the medieval fantasy and gothic architecture that any Souls fan knows and loves – and that’s not where the experience ends. Cold Symmetry promises to deliver challenging melee combat that is “strategic, deliberate, and unforgiving” – combat that we’ve come to expect from Soulslikes games.
One of the most fascinating mechanics in Mortal Shell is the class system – if you can really call it that. Players can occupy “mortal shells” – the remains of fallen warriors that you stumble upon throughout the game – and each shell has its own set of strengths and weaknesses as well as its own style of combat. Players can swap shells at will, which definitely seems like it’ll come in handy given the variety of different boss encounters the release date trailer showcases.
The release date trailer sets forward a scheduled release on August 18, a fairly early date for a Q3 title, but the game’s success in beta was likely a big factor in its chosen date. Following the game’s success in its closed beta test on PC, it went public on the Epic Games Store and saw over 350,000 players and more than 6 million views across YouTube and Twitch.
“Launching Mortal Shell worldwide is a dream come true. Our commitment to you is to create a soulslike game that is authentic, uncompromising and unrelenting,” writes the Cold Symmetry development team in an entry on the game’s official website. “We were humbled by the popularity of the beta and we closely studied the feedback we received to create something that we are incredibly proud of.”
Mortal Shell is coming digitally to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Epic Games Store August 18, with a Steam release coming sometime in 2021. You can check out the game’s website here.
