The Dark Souls community has made and seen many different mods that allowed players to take on the appearances of other characters from other franchises, including the addition of bosses that look a certain way, as well as weapons or names that are in that same line of crossover. However, unlike over in Half-Life 2 which got a massive overhaul mod, Dark Souls has yet to see one that big, until now.
A modder by the username Grimruhk has been working on an “enormous fan-made overhaul” or the original 2011 Dark Souls game titled ‘Daughters of Ash’. And in the creator’s blog post about the newly released mod, they describe it as “a new adventure in Lordran”. The patch notes and summaries of what’s new on Grimruhk’s blog post talk about how players will have to go about the adventure in a new way. With nearly twice the amount of new content, that warning is best followed.
While containing no new game assets (visual affects, dialogue recordings, character models) this new mod has new interwoven story lines, new boss fights, and a whole lot more. Grimruhk explains that not everything can be seen during the first playthrough of the game, and encourages people to play it more than twice. With all the new weapons and secrets, it’s clear that Grimruhk made sure this was the closest to a complete overhaul as possible.
Player ahmz1404 shows off in a short video what changes were made from the original game in this Daughters of Ash mod:
The video shows off one of the many new mini-bosses and bosses in the Daughters of Ash mod, and how the fighting has changed from the original style of Dark Souls.
The only downfall of Daughters of Ash is that it currently is only available and works on a clean install of the original Dark Souls. This means that no randomizers or other mods can be in the game already, as Daughters of Ash is incompatible with them.
