Today a new trailer was released about the upcoming horror game The Dark Pictures Man of Medan. Man of Medan is an interactive horror game that takes place on the high seas. The story so far is that you and your crew of four are going to take a dive boat to explore an old WWII wreck. The game has no main protagonist as the player can play as any one of the five crew members. The game consists of several branches and has multiple endings. Each ending depends on all the choices you make, really putting the Butterfly Effect into the groundwork of the game. Man of Medan is being developed by Supermassive Games, the same developer that worked on Until Dawn.
The game has three modes available to the player: Solo Story, in which the player is truly alone and has to travel through the wreck by themselves. Movie Night Mode, in which the game allows the player and four others to play together as different characters, thus diversifying the possibilities by including a myriad of other choices. And Shared Story, in which the player and one other person play online, making choices that affect both players in unforseeable ways.
According to an article on Polygon, Man of Medan will have up to five hours of gameplay per story path. The Dark Pictures Anthology which releases its first title this August is going to be an eight part story with Man of Medan being the first entry. Each game is going to be narrated by being known as The Curator. Each game will have one aspect linking every game together and two games are scheduled to come out every year. That means twice the horror every year! According to an interview with Supermassive Games CEO Pete Samuels, “We want to surprise people each time – when we announce the second [game], we want it to be the last thing people expected, in terms of theme and subgenre and whatever. And then again with the third one. We have them mapped out for the first eight.” This seems to imply that the company already has the game strategy completely figured out. Whatever horros await us in this Anthology, we will have to wait until August 30th, 2019 to find out. The game will be available for the PlayStation 4, The Xbox One, and PC.
