The 2014 visual-novel Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is the second installment in Spike Chunsoft’s famous Danganronpa series. Goodbye Despair is overwhelmingly loved and highly-reviewed by fans, which has no doubt led to the game’s upcoming remaster. The remaster is titled Danganronpa 2×2 and was announced during September 2025’s Nintendo Direct. The game is set to release sometime in 2026 and will include improved visuals and brand-new story content for long-time fans of the series.

The teaser trailer for Danganronpa 2×2 shows glimpses of the game’s improved artwork and animations. Many visual elements, such as character sprites and backgrounds, have been re-drawn with higher quality compared to the art from Goodbye Despair. The trailer also showcased improved animations, namely a re-designed and re-animated version of protagonist Hajime Hinata’s “counter” animation. Aside from simple graphical improvements, Danganronpa 2×2 will also feature brand-new sprite animations. These seem to occur during various character interactions, with the trailer showing animations for the sprites of Gundham Tanaka and Nagito Komeada.

The remaster will include the original storyline of Goodbye Despair with improved visuals. Additionally, the website for Danganronpa 2×2 reveals that players will also get to immerse themselves in a brand new storyline. When describing the game’s content, the website says there will be “a brand-new scenario with different victims, culprits, and tricks! This new scenario contains just as much gameplay as the original.” Fans of the original game’s characters have no need to worry, as the new scenario will share the same setting and cast as the original Goodbye Despair.

The last traditional Danganronpa title was Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony in 2017, meaning that after eight years Danganronpa fans finally have another trip to Hope’s Peak Academy to look forward to. Players will be able to play Danganronpa 2×2 on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.
