Another day, another bad situation with Cyberpunk 2077. Despite being a financial success for CD Project Red, the company just can’t seem to catch a break on the performance of the actual game, something that has apparently resonated with their own studio during the development. As if this wasn’t bad enough, there’s a chance that investors of the company could launch a class-action lawsuit due to misrepresentation. This new tidbit of information isn’t helping matters, as it’s recently been discovered by a Reddit user, and confirmed on GOG’s official support forums that your actual save files, the ones that track and hold your in-game progress, may become corrupt if they end up being too big.

According to the GOG forum post, if a save file becomes corrupt, it is essentially damaged beyond repair and cannot be used anymore. The post also mentions that the corruption is due to an overabundance of items and crafting materials. Both of these things are invaluable to Cyberpunk 2077 players and are serious needs in order to survive, and upgrade their equipment. The post also states an “item duplication glitch” which is actual exploitation in the game that abuses the item drops from vending machines and sellers.
Apparently, this is causing save files to grow in terms of storage, which if it exceeds roughly 8MB then it has a high chance of being corrupted. CD Projekt Red states in the post that a potential patch might increase the save file limit in order to mitigate this problem, but for those files that have already been corrupted, it’s too late to save them. For the time being, a moderator on the official site’s forums has created a thread with suggestions and troubleshooting for those affected.
Considering the massive scope and size of the game itself, and not to mention the amount of things you can pick up just to fill your inventory with, this is a fairly debilitation situation for the players and the company. Imagine if all of your in-game progress, all of the countless hours you’ve put in was gone just like that? We can’t even begin to imagine such a dilemma, and we sincerely hope that those affected by this either have back up saves or are able to get this problem remedied sooner than later.
