When it comes to gaming as a medium, it lends itself to all sorts of creativity. Games are often created in various ways, such as 3D art, pixel art, and live-action gaming, and are no strangers to different forms of media. So when it comes to movies and games, they can work hand in hand to create a cinematic adventure. As STRL Games announced on August 13th, they are developing a game that blends movies and gaming, creating a cinematic single-player adventure RPG .curator by Altered Carbon creator Richard K. Morgan. The game will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. As there is no current release date yet, you can wishlist the game on Steam.
.curator is a cinematic single-player game that has you explore a familiar yet uniquely different post-Victorian world, where you must learn its power dynamics and understand it as a whole. The game itself is episodic, as purchasing the game gives you access to episode one, and later episodes will be released as downloadable content, similar to Telltale Games. The game will have you investigate relics and ruins of a mysterious ancient alien civilization from the past as you attempt to make them safe for humans. You will be able to upgrade both body and mind with neural overclocking, allowing you to push both past their limits. As you join the Curator Corps, you will be assigned an onboard AI assistant, C.R.I.S.S.I.; consult her on your decisions. You will accomplish all this while dealing with past trauma from past mistakes and crimes as a curator, as you attempt to find redemption and hope for a better tomorrow.
“.curator blends everything we love about games and movies,” said STRTL Games art director Oleksii Plaksin in a press release. “It delivers a cinematic experience that you actively play rather than passively watch. You make the choices, you alter future events—you’re the Curator.”
In the same press release, Richard K. Morgan explained, “One of the great things about the games industry is that it’s constantly pushing the boundaries. You know that somewhere there’s always someone working on some cool new stuff you’ve never seen before. .curator offers something else, something different—a cooler, more thoughtful, more painterly and, ultimately, I think, more humane take on the gaming experience.”
STRL Games is currently developing .curator and has Altered Carbon creator Richard K. Morgan at the helm. This is his first time dipping into gaming, but as he is a well-respected writer who appreciates both media and has respect for them, this game is shaping up to be interesting. .curator currently has no official release date but will release simultaneously for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. As there is no current release date yet, you can wishlist the game on Steam.
