Ah yes, Crazy Taxi. From its beginnings as an arcade game in 1999 and later being ported to the SEGA Dreamcast in 2000, it remains a gaming icon for its wild and absurd gameplay that has you, a taxi driver, perform stunts while you take your passengers to their drop-off locations, trying to earn as much money before time runs out. While two releases in the franchise have made their way onto mobile stores during the 2010s, and before that a port of Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2 known as Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars was released on PlayStation Portable in 2007 and a port of the first game, known as Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride, was released on the Game Boy Advance in 2003, there hasn’t been a major release for the franchise since Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller back in 2002.
Yes, we’ve gone more than two decades without a new Crazy Taxi mainline release- however, with SEGA trying to revive many dormant franchises under their belt, they revealed a trailer showing a new Crazy Taxi game was in the works during The Game Awards 2023, which was later shown to be titled Crazy Taxi: World Tour during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. This new entry will be built on Unreal Engine 5, and will feature five cities to drive around through, expanding the playable world from previous entries. More was revealed yesterday at Gamescom 2026, including footage of the new multiplayer mode, a first for the series, that allows players to compete against other drivers for passengers and try to take control of the streets, adding more to the chaos that the series is known for. World Tour will see the return of series protagonist Axel, as well as other characters such as Gena, B.D. Joe, and Gus, and will feature iconic music from the first game, including Bad Religion’s “Ten in 2010”, “Them and Us”, and “Inner Logic”, as well as “All I Want” and “Change the World” by The Offspring, as well as music from newer artists, which SEGA plans to reveal in the future.
For those who want to play sooner than later, SEGA is inviting players to sign up for the World Tour Multiplayer Closed Network Test, with applications open as of now until August 31st, and the CNT running from September 11th-13th. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is set to release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, and will be an Xbox Play Anywhere title.
