Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions of Control: Ultimate Edition have been delayed. Remedy Entertainment, the game’s developer, announced the news to Twitter. The updated version was meant to be released at the end of the year. Now, the development team is looking for more time. It’s now expected to arrive on next-gen consoles in early 2021.
The full statement from Remedy Entertainment cites quality assurance as the reason for the delay. They also ask fans for their “understanding and patience.” Remedy announced the next-gen versions of Control: Ultimate Edition back in August. Then released the title to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. The Ultimate Edition includes the main game, and The Foundation and AWE expansions. Control: Ultimate Edition will have a free upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X if players had previously bought the same edition for PS4 or Xbox One.
According to Polygon, “current Control players — using the original base game and the expansions or Season Pass — will not have any way to play the upgraded version for the new consoles.” The decision by publisher, 505 Games, says customers will have to buy the Ultimate Edition in order to qualify for the free upgrade — which costs $39.99. However, 505 Games reassured customers will be able to play the current-gen version of Control on next-gen consoles through backwards compatibility. A Q&A with 505 Games says users will be able to “enjoy an enhanced experience.”Control: Ultimate Edition was also recently brought to the Nintendo Switch where the game was accessed via a cloud version. Remedy Entertainment has delayed the next-gen versions until sometime in early 2021.
