Earlier today, publisher Devolver Digital put out a press release on their website announcing the brand-new update for Mycopunk, a cooperative FPS developed by Pigeons at Play. According to the patch notes detailed on the game’s steam community page, the Oxythane Breach Update comes with a new weapon, new game modes, a new map, new enemies to fight, and more.
Mycopunk might have flown under your radar, but it’s carved out a small space for itself both in the Indie scene and in broader gaming industry. In May of this year, the game garnered some attention before its release based on a humorous tweet from the CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford:
Mycopunk is cheaper than a point of meth – probably has fewer side effects, too! https://t.co/ICgEYZ7FEq

And from what it sounds like according to prominent indie publisher Devolver Digital, there can be only more high-inducing levels of gameplay in the Oxythane Update:
…it’s the biggest, wildest, most explosively fungal mutation the game’s seen yet.
This claim doesn’t seem to be hyperbole. The new update has no shortage of content to enjoy. It features a brand new weapon, a burst firing SMG called The Accelerator, which is fully customizable thanks to Mycopunk’s tetris-like upgrade system. On that note, you can now also “turbocharge” upgrades with Strange Components, which you might need to tackle the formidable new enemies; The Devastator, Missilehead, and Rocket Grunt. There’s also a new special assignment mission called Oxythane Breach, a level free-roam mission type dubbed Paid Time Off, and a new map in the Gravity Farms, one of the game’s themed sectors of maps. And lastly, of course, there are numerous minor balancing changes, UI improvements, and bug fixes.

If you didn’t hear about Mycopunk’s release in July, then you missed out on the start of a game that aims to replicate the chaos and blue-collar cynicism titles like Deep Rock Galactic and Lethal Company effortlessly deliver. Luckily, this new update presents a great opportunity to play the game with even more content than it had at launch. Mycopunk puts players into the shoes of four gruff (and Australian) robot employees of the fictional space-bourne Saxon corporation, crams them into an orbital drop pod, and on planetfall has you frantically mowing down hordes of fungal monsters hellbent on killing you. To aid in your completion of the game’s missions, there are four fully voiced character-classes you can choose from; Glider, Wrangler, Scrapper, and Bruiser, all of whom have distinct upgradeable skills and movement abilities. The maps the game’s missions take place on are not procedurally generated, but depending on the difficulty level you select for your team, there are randomized modifiers that shake up the horde shooting gameplay and can elevate it to truly ridiculous circumstances. Indeed, Mycopunk’s take on the genre is unique in how fast paced and kinetic it becomes; and skilled play often involves sliding, jumping, and grinding around at mach speed. Although there’s definitely a lot of new releases to play right now, Mycopunk might exist in a blindspot that it doesn’t deserve, and the Oxythane Update serves as a great reminder to check it out.
