Courageous, a content studio from CNN, is teaming up with Square Enix to release an original documentary on the Deus Ex series. The documentary will delve into subjects such as human augmentation, and the relationship between humanity and technology. It’s called “Human by Design” and it’s available exclusively on Amazon Video. Below is the trailer for the documentary from the official Deus Ex YouTube channel.
For the uninitiated, The Deus Ex series is an RPG/FPS that deals with themes of robotization and prejudice. The first game in the series was released in 2000 from Warren Spector and Ion Storm. Deus Ex was groundbreaking for it’s emphasis on choices and approaching objectives based on how players see fit to achieve them. Years later, Eidos and Square Enix secured the rights to the Deus Ex franchise and released a prequel: Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The game was met with commercial success and critical acclaim from publications such as Game Informer and IGN. Naturally, a sequel was green-lit. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will continue the series to tell a tale of social inequality and segregation.
This documentary was produced in conjunction with a conference also named Human by Design. This conference will take place in New York City on August 3rd of this year. Below is quote from the official website for the event:
Human by Design is a one-day conference that explores the world of human augmentation with two goals: First, to bring together the top minds to debate, question, and challenge what it means to be human; and second, to create an Ethical Framework that can serve as a way forward for augmentation guidelines.
The Human by Design documentary features insight from accomplished academics with experiences in prosthetics and technology. It seems as if Courageous has spared no expense in assembling this collection of minds. These academics come from all kinds: race, creed, and occupation. They’re all united in a field that blurs the line between human and machine. An example of the contributors to the documentary include a Syrian revolutionary paramedic who lost his leg when his ambulance was hit by artillery. Now he works with Refugee Open Ware to create high quality and affordable prosthetics for refugees in camps. This is just one of the many minds who discuss the ethical and practical aspects of bionics.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will be released worldwide on August 23rd for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
