Christopher Dring, formerly of Gamesindustry.biz, has announced the launch of a new gaming publication called The Game Business. With help from The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley, The Game Business is “a new media outlet that will meet game professionals where they are. And we’re not just talking about studio and publishing bosses, but everyone working across the industry (and even those outside of it who want to understand a bit more about what makes this business tick).”
“We’ll be covering what’s selling, what’s trending and what’s struggling, we’ll be analysing established and emerging platforms, distribution channels, monetisation practices, new markets, policy changes, shifting player behaviours, the battle for time in a world without any, and so much more,” Dring said. The Game Business will be doing this in two ways, The Game Business Show and a Newsletter.
The Game Business Show will be video podcasts and interviews that will roughly be 30-45 minutes in length. There will be two shows a week, every Tuesday and Thursday. One day will be a ‘feature’ show which could be an interview or a deep dive into a specific topic. The other day will be news and anaysis, focusing on the latest developments, trends and data, complete with exclusive stories and insights you won’t find anywhere else.
With the Newsletter, The Game Business will be delivering the game insight (and occasionally a bit more) directly into your inbox. Those interested can also read the newsletter on a website and they will be sharing written information via social media such as LinkedIn.
“I sent this concept around to hear what the industry thought,” Dring explained. “Lots of people offered me excellent advice, but one person who was particularly encouraging was Geoff Keighley (he of The Game Awards fame). Geoff didn’t just like the idea, he asked if he could fund the project. I’ve known Geoff for a few years, his enthusiasm for this industry is infectious and I jumped at the offer.”
“Christopher Dring is a singular talent in the video game industry and deeply invested in the health and growth of our sector,” said Keighley, in a statement. “When Christopher presented me with his idea of starting this venture, I was eager to help him create a new type of trade publication that aligns perfectly with how our industry consumes critical business intelligence today—fast, focused, and forward-thinking.”
“Geoff may be backing it, but TGB is not part of The Game Awards (despite the acronym),” Dring said. “This is a separate entity that I’m responsible for. But Geoff’s support does mean we can go faster, I can make most of it free, and it means we can put on our first event: The Game Business Live, which takes place alongside Summer Game Fest in June.”
The Game Business Live is a thought leadership summit featuring prominent business and creative minds from the gaming and entertainment industries. These leaders will meet on stage to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for the world’s most prominent form of entertainment, with coverage appearing in TGB and other media outlets around the world. There will also be networking opportunities for qualified members of the gaming industry, as well as sponsorship opportunities for interested partners.
