Immediately following the May Melee, of which Dallas Fuel were the unexpected champion, Overwatch League’s June Joust is underway. Qualifying matches are currently being played, having begun on May 21st, and will continue until the playoff tournament beginning June 10th. According to the Overwatch League, after the regular season qualifying matches are played, five teams from the West region and three from the East region will play head to head. However, as announced on June 2nd, some of the Eastern region teams will have a special treat.
Hanzhou Spark, currently at the top of the leaderboard, will be hosting the first homestand event since the beginning of quarantine in March 2020. The 2020 season of Overwatch League was designed around these homestands, with traveling teams and home and away games. This was a big bonus for fans who lived in cities that boasted teams, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, all Overwatch League games were forced online. With the vaccines beginning to spread through the population, Hangzhou Spark will take a step in an inspiring direction by once again hosting in-person homestand games. While being the first homestand in 2021, it will also be the first homestand in China.
All of the Chinese-based teams are scheduled to play in this homestand. Tickets are available for the June 5th event, which will include the teams Los Angeles Valiant, Philadelphia Fusion, Guangzhou Charge, Seoul Dynasty, Chengdu Hunters, and of course, Hangzhou Spark. There are also tickets available for the June 6th event, which will feature teams that have not yet been decided. This weekend homestand will be located at the Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City Academic Exchange Center. It is unknown yet if the Western region will be following the East’s lead, or if homestands will become a more regular event, but hopes have been lifted for fans and all hope these matches will be a success and imitated in the future.
