What started as an apparent April Fools Joke has manifested into an actual announcement. Cellar Door Games has let the cat out of the bag and revealed that their extremely popular indie rogue-like title, Rogue Legacy, will be receiving a proper sequel. Appropriately titled, Rogue Legacy 2, the studio tweeted out the confirmation of its existence with some additional screenshots as well as a promise of more information in the “coming days.”
Yes, it’s official. Rogue Legacy 2 is in development! We’ll be releasing a lot more info in the coming days.
Until then please enjoy these WIP screenshots! ❤ pic.twitter.com/RRO5yk02yd

As you can see in the tweet above, the art style seems to have been improved upon. In addition, the studio also revealed that Judson Cowan and A Shell in the Pit, who worked on Rogue Legacy’s musical soundtrack, will return to score Rogue Legacy 2’s. Cellar Door Games didn’t state any potential release date or a time frame for that matter, but since this was just announced, it’s more than likely that we won’t know that information for at least a while.
For those who don’t know, Rogue Legacy is a rogue-like action indie game that came out in 2013. The title was part of a new generation of indie games that became very popular for the time, which included Spelunky and FTL: Faster Than Light. The combined difficulty along with the generated level design caught fire quickly in the PC gaming community and subsequently spread to the home consoles. Today’s rogue-like titles, like Dead Cells and Darkest Dungeon, can be considered the modern equivalent as they all use a similar style.
As for Rogue Legacy itself, it was well-received and has since garnered a huge fan following. In 2018 Cellar Door Games released another title, Full Metal Furies, which didn’t quite break through like Rogue Legacy, but was still popular in its own right. The sequel has a lot to live up to, but since it’s been seven years since the original’s release, we’re pretty stoked to see a sequel in general. As we said earlier, the studio plans to share more on Rogue Legacy 2 soon, and hopefully, we’ll get a release date in the near future.
