CD Projekt Red Reveals Cyberpunk 2 Has Moved To Preproduction, New Sales Numbers, & More In Latest Financial Report

During its latest financial report for Q1 2025, developer CD Projekt Red has announced an exciting update for Cyberpunk fans. The sequel, codenamed Project Orion, now being called Cyberpunk 2 has moved from its conceptual phase and has enterted preproduction. The financial report also provided some new sales figures for Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion Phantom Liberty and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.

“Several weeks ago, the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase,” the developer said in a statement. “As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to preproduction.”

During the call, CD Projekt Red also highlighted new sales figures for the Cyberpunk expansion, Phantom Liberty. The expansion has sold more than 10 million copies, ahead of the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition which will contain Phantom Liberty.

“This result fills us with great satisfaction, especially given that a new addition is about to join our Cyberpunk portfolio [when] on 5 June the game’s Ultimate Edition will be coming to the new Nintendo Switch 2 console,” CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said. Nowakowski responded to a suggestion that the sequel won’t release until late 2030 or early 2031. “I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average.”

“Having said that, keep in mind that each project is unique, and there are many variables that influence the final outcome,” Nowakowski added. “So I will not lead you into specific years, but yes, this is pretty much how it looks.”

CD Projekt Red also revealed that The Witcher III: Wild Hunt has sold more than 60 million copies since its release as the game celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. CD Projekt Red also revealed a final patch that introduces cross-platform support for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Earlier this month, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith may have accidentally revealed that players may be traveling to two cities in the sequel. At the Digital Dragons 2025 conference, the game designer, who worked closely with CD Projekt Red with Cyberpunk 2077, said that he isn’t as involved with Cyberpunk 2.

“Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments, and seeing what they had, ‘Oh look, this is the new cyberware, what do you think?’ ‘Oh yeah, that’s pretty good, that works here,’ ” Pondsmith explained. He went on to talk about a brand new city that will be featured in the game. Pondsmith describes it as “like Chicago gone wrong.”

“I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment guys, and he was explaining how the new place in Orion, because there’s another city we visit — I’m not telling you any more than that but there’s another city we visit. And Night City is still there. But I remember looking at it and going, yeah I understand the feel you’re going for this, and this really does work. And it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong. I said, ‘Yeah, I can see this working.’”
