Castle Crashers just got a major update for the first time in over a decade. Painter Boss Paradise, the latest DLC for The Behemoth’s beloved 2008 beat ’em up, is now available on Steam, according to a press release. The update brings fully customizable characters, an all-new knight named Paint Junior, and a complete art overhaul for the game’s world, weapons, and cast.
It’s been 14 years since the last new character joined the Castle Crashers roster, but Paint Junior arrives with a brand-new magic type that players can also build into their own creations. The DLC includes a template and in-game editor for crafting every part of a character, from the head and shield to the “beefy form” and even the Back Off Barbarian mini-game piece. Players can use any art program to modify the template, which updates in real time in the DLC editor.
The Behemoth also introduced new visuals for every official character, a redrawn world map, and a reworked main menu featuring eight different illustrated scenes. Players who prefer the classic look can turn the new visuals off from the main menu at any time. The visuals of the game remain as unique as ever, as seen through the equally creative launch trailer.
Dan Paladin, co-founder and art director at The Behemoth, noted that this DLC grew out of a simple menu refresh and gradually became a full-blown expansion. “Then we added a DLC with fresh takes on all playable characters, weapons, and the world map, in addition to letting you make your own characters,” Paladin said. “Don’t want to make anything? No problem. You can download a ton of new characters published in the Steam Workshop.”
The update adds quality-of-life improvements to Castle Crashers across the board, including in the Back Off Barbarian mode. The custom characters can be toggled on or off, and the community has already begun populating the Steam Workshop with an eclectic mix of creations.
Castle Crashers originally launched on Xbox Live Arcade in 2008 before expanding to multiple platforms. With this new DLC, the game gets a fresh layer of personality without losing its co-op chaos or absurdist charm.
