It looks like Casey Hudson and his new studio aren’t wasting any time on creating a brand new IP. The former Mass Effect creative director revealed alongside with a brand new website that Humanoid Studios is working on a brand new IP that will include “focusing on character-driven narrative in an all-new science-fiction universe.” The website also has a few concept images that are both intriguing as they are breathtaking. Clearly, Hudson is taking some cues from his previous experiences with the sci-fi genre, but the fact that the IP now exists is exciting in and of itself.
While the actual concept art on the website is more than likely just that, concept art, it’s still exciting to see Hudson and his team delve into what he knows best. Perhaps the most emotion-evoking one is the humanoid-looking person staring out at what appears to be a massive skull-shaped structure. It’s possible that it is an actual skull, but only time will tell if Humanoid Studios will reveal such revelations to us. Unfortunately, there weren’t any specific details about the story, but here’s hoping that Hudson and company will unveil that to the world in due time.
As we already mentioned, Hudson is the former creative director of the Mass Effect trilogy, which is comprised of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. Since the three entries have released, in 2007, 2010, and 2012 respectively, each one has garnered critical acclaim and has gone on to be considered one of the greatest trilogies in the video game community. Mass Effect 2 in particular has been often considered one of the greatest video games of all time, as it utilized every aspect of action, RPG, and storytelling to near perfection.
Prior to this, Hudson worked on a variety of titles at BioWare, such as MDK 2, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and Neverwinter Nights. He got his first major break in 2003 when he directed what many to be considered the greatest Star Wars game of all time; Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Hudson left BioWare shortly after the completion of Mass Effect 3, but returned in 2017 to take on the role of general manager for the studio. He left once again in late 2020, as did longtime executive producer Mark Durrah.
