The Carmageddon series is a classic for many fans, dating back to the release of the original in 1997. Based off the idea of vehicle combat, it would go on to inspire many evolutions of the genre. Over the course of the series, it has evolved to lean further into the action-filled and absurd violence that the first game indulged in, leading to the announcement of Carmageddon: Rogue Shift in December of 2025. The spin-off series has now received its own trailer, showing off some of what fans can expect for the new game.
Developed by 34BitThings, Carmageddon: Rogue Shift takes the violent origin of the original game and adapts it into darker overall setting. According to the game’s Steam store page, players race in the Carmageddon in order to have the chance to leave the doomed planet. While the monsters and bleak story may build up a sense of uneasiness, the game also allows for the some of the mindless fun that comes with driving around destructive cars. The trailer promotes a feature that will allow vehicles to be upgraded in between crashes, encouraging high aggression during the mayhem. The game also promises a roguelite campaign to better explore the upgrade system outside of regular gameplay.
Following the release of the trailer, many fans shared mixed opinions over the changes to the standard formula the series was used to. While many in the comment section are excited, others are skeptical that, being a spinoff, the title will deviate from what Carmageddon is about. It is not yet clear if the trailer has given all the information needed to make that judgment yet, so fans will need to wait to see how it plays.
Carmageddon: Rogue Shift looks to have all the draws of a vehicle combat game with a few new features added as well. The game is set to release in early 2026 for console and PC.
