Canada Revealed for Civilization VI: Gathering Storm

The first of the eight new civilizations that will be added in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm has been revealed. Players will be able to utilize the power of the Great White North and take over the world (politely) as Canada, led by Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the country’s seventh Prime Minister and a strong proponent for English and French unity during his time in office.

Canada is known for being a cold country, and Laurier’s ‘Last Best West’ ability allows the country to capitalize on their frigid origins. Laurier can purchase Snow and Tundra tiles for his cities at half the price, double the resource yield from such tiles, and build farms on Tundras to boost Food output. The nation itself has the ability ‘Four Faces of Peace.’ Canada is unable to declare surprise wars (wars without a Casus Beli, like having denounced someone several turns ago) but other nations can’t declare surprise wars on Canada either. In other words, Canada has to be polite about their war declarations. In addition, Canada gets more Diplomatic Favor based on how much Tourism they’re producing per turn, as well as bonus Diplomatic Favor for completing Emergencies or Scored Competitions.

As for unique units and buildings, they’re classically Canadian. The Hockey Rink gives extra Appeal, Amenities, and bonus culture on adjacent Snow, Snow Hills, Tundra, and Tundra Hills tiles, plus other bonuses based on where it’s built, such as extra Food, Production, Culture, or Tourism. Naturally, this is because people there love their hockey. Meanwhile, their unique units, Mounties, gain a combat bonus when they’re fighting near a National Park.

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm releases February 14, 2019. The game will introduce player-driven climate change and ecological disasters, the World Congress, Diplomatic Victories, and more civilizations and leaders. There are eight more leaders and seven more civilizations to be revealed.
