Activision and Infinity Ward lifted the curtain on multiplayer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the reboot of the series set to release later this year. Recently, we learned more information on a new game mode, but now everyone has a better understanding of how multiplayer will function in this year’s Call of Duty game.
There were several game modes on display during the official Livestream. Headquarters, Team Deathmatch, and several new game modes were shown. One of the many differences between Modern Warfare and past Call of Duty titles is how the map design has changed. The game will not have the typical 3 lane map design of the past and will focus on larger tactical maps that can accommodate more players. Another thing that has changed for this year’s Call of Duty is the emphasis on customization. Unlike last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, there are no classes or specialists. The customization that is allowed in the new Gunsmith menu allows players to adjust to whatever playstyle they want. Killstreaks make a return to the Call of Duty series. Players will get rewarded with special weapons or abilities for how many enemies that are taken down before they die themselves.
The last big thing that was revealed during the multiplayer premiere event is the announcement of the Modern Warfare Open Beta. The Beta is available on all platforms and will include cross-play between platforms. Begining on September 12-13 a PS4 Early Access Beta is available to those who pre-order the game. The PS4 Open Beta will occur on September 14-16. On September 19-20, an Early Access Beta will be available on Xbox One and PC as well as another Open Beta on PlayStation 4. September 21-23 is an Open Beta available on all platforms.
Speaking to IGN, Joe Cecot, the Multiplayer Design Director spoke about Battle Royale for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. “We really focused on Modern Warfare, authentic and gritty, realistic weapons, and it’s a different experience. It’s really…just about pulling back to Modern Warfare and keeping that pure. Infinity Ward has fans of battle royale. We’re excited for large player counts and things like that, but right now we’re really focused on core multiplayer”.
Activision and Infinity Ward also announced the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition of the game which is the collector’s edition. The Dark Edition will come with the game, a steelbook, Night Vision Googles and a stand for them. Digital items include a custom in-game tactical knife, “All Ghillied Up” Operator Pack, “Crew Expendable” Operator Pack, “War Pig” Operator Pack, and the Call of Duty Endowment Animated Calling Card which is only included at participating retailers. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released on October 25, 2019, for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
