Well, it took only two weeks for Activision to confirm what seemingly everyone knows already. The Call of Duty franchise once again returns with another installment of the rebooted Modern Warfare series. Call of Duty Modern Warfare III was officially revealed by the company, along with a very brief teaser trailer. The title will officially launch later this year on November 10. This continuation breaks the semi-release of the usual Call of Duty formula as we usually see a different entry from another part of the franchise such as Black Ops or another named title. Instead, the developers seem to be gearing up for a back-to-back release, which could mean a number of different things.
The trailer is only cinematic, and as we already mentioned, is very brief. The trailer starts off with the standard Modern Warfare motif of the night vision goggles, green and wavy. This changes quickly when the color scheme swaps from neon green to murder red. The camera pans through the lines as we hear Captain Price in the background talking whilst the lines begin to crumble one by one. The trailer ends with a face shot of an unknown person, perhaps the antagonist, as the title and logo are presented to the viewer. This vast change of color palette sets the tone of the next entry, as we might be in for a much darker and more sinister playthrough.
We also got a look at the main antagonist, the fan favorite Makarov. The character returns from the original Modern Warfare trilogy, and finally makes a grand entrance in Modern Warfare III. The trailer combines live action with Makarov as he is getting a tattoo with glimpses of in game footage. We see a night level set in pouring rain with some soldiers getting ready to infiltrate a massive structure. We then see some civilians trying to escape an area, possibly as a callback to the infamous No Russian level from the original Modern Warfare II in 2009. The trailer closes out with Price saying that Makarov is the next target, solidifying that he is the main focus of the next title.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare III had been long rumored since earlier this year when it was discovered that Sledgehammer Games would take on the duty for the next entry and not the longtime stalwart Infinity Ward. The latter developed and released the previous title, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, which launched late last year. Rumors have also been circulating that Activision’s other major Call of Duty studio, Treyarch, will take the reigns for the 2024 release. Either way, Call of Duty Modern Warfare III is officially on the way later this year, and it will launch on November 10 with a worldwide reveal set for next week on August 17.
