Bungie is at a bit of a standstill at the moment. Following the criticism with Marathon and its subsequent delay, and the next big update for Destiny 2 getting a lukewarm reception, everyone in the video game community is wondering what is going to happen with Bungie. Whatever’s next, one thing will be for certain: a new CEO will be leading the studio. Pete Parsons is stepping down from his position as CEO. Justin Truman has been announced as Parsons’ successor.
We are proud to announce that Justin Truman will be stepping up as Bungie’s new Studio Head as Pete Parsons retires from his position to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders.https://t.co/VSBMccZiXZ

Parsons spent the past two decades at Bungie, but his last few years as CEO was met with criticism from both fans and employees. There were reports of alleged workplace toxicity and alleged “overt sexism” at the studio back in 2021 prior to Sony’s acquisition of Bungie.
A year later, Bungie laid off 100 employees, and Parsons released a statement that was heavily criticized as tone-deaf and a “slap in the face to anyone impacted by the layoffs. A year later, Bungie laid off 220 more staff. Current and former Bungie employees called the second round of layoffs “inexcusable,” with calls for Parsons to resign.
Parsons also received criticism from staff for spending millions of dollars on classic cars since Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, and bragging about his lavish collection ahead of job losses. The CEO’s public profile on Bring a Trailer revealed he’d appeared to spend $2,414,550 on vehicles.
Fans shared the same feelings with staff against Parsons. Noted Destiny content creator MyNameIsByf, Destiny’s resident Lore master posted on X:
Leadership needs to be changed.
Their decisions have consistently led to disaster for everyone who has actually been making the games we play.
They’ve been reckless with the studio, its employees, and its franchises.
The problem is clear. Bad leadership. It needs to change. https://t.co/ga01igprSl pic.twitter.com/lQhmkUIzgw

“To the Bungie community, After more than two decades of helping build this incredible studio, establishing the Bungie Foundation, and growing inspiring communities around our work, I have decided to pass the torch,” Parsons said. “This journey has been the honor of a lifetime. I am deeply proud of the worlds we’ve built together and the millions of players who call them home – and most of all I am privileged by the opportunity to work alongside the incredible minds at Bungie.”
Justin Truman also released a statement on the news saying,
“When we’re at our best – we create those worlds alongside you, our player community, and build something that matters. Something that’s worth your time, your passion, and your investment in us. Something that I’ve learned, hopefully, overdelivers.
I’ve also been part of these efforts at Bungie when we’ve maybe not been at our best. When we’ve stumbled and realized through listening to our community that we had missed the mark. I know I’ve personally learned a lot over the years, as have all of us here, from those conversations.
I am committed to supporting and working alongside every member of the team here as we continue pouring our hearts and souls into these worlds. Worlds that we love, and that we hope have been worth your time and your passion. Because ultimately those worlds only exist, and thrive, with you in them.
We are hard at work right now doing that – both with Marathon and Destiny. We’re currently heads down, but we’ll have more to show you in both of these worlds later this year.”
